The Unique Wines of Uruguay - Tasting Tour 2013
Uruguay is a winegrowing country in South America producing some amazing wines. It lies along the 35th paralles in line with Mendoza in Argentina, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The coastal climate is often compared to Bordeaux’s thus creating wines with well balanced levels of alcohol and acidity.
Most only think of Tannat when thinking of Uruguay. And rightly so since Uruguay grows more Tannat than the rest of the world combined, it’s their signature variety, brought to the country in the 1870s when the Spanish brought the vines to the region. With Tannat being too tannic or too firm for some, they are also finding success with merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, tempranillo and viognier.
*The pic in the middle is of Reinaldo De Lucca, Producer and Wine Maker of Delucca wines in Uruguay. He was quite the charmer ;-)
