Live twitter tastings are my favorite. And in a live video component, even better!! So of course I am all for any opportunity to taste wines, learn more about them, speak directly to the winemaker, tweet questions and interact with my followers. This tasting was sponsored by Paul Mas to taste through their line of wines Arrogant Frog.
Interesting name you say? Cute story. People always say that they French are arrogant when it comes to their wines and wine tasting and the like. So…they agreed! Yeah yeah. Of course we are arrogant, we are arrogant frogs. Et voila!
We spent an hour with fourth-generation vintner Jean-Claude Mas as he lead us through a tasting of the wines adding in tasting notes and cute anecdotes about Languedoc and the vineyard. Jean-Claude took over the family vineyard in 2000 and he main goal has been to use only premium quality grapes to craft superior wines with a modern, New World flair.
Arrogant Frog Sauvignon Blanc (2013) - Very crisp, tart flavors. Lots of citrus fruit and herbs. Best served well chilled with light summer fare such as salads or seafood. Interestingly enough, this wine fermented a bit in oak barrels. Rare for an SB, but that did smooth out some of the excessive tartness and bracing acidity you usually find in a Sauv Blanc.
Arrogant Frog Chardonnay (2013) - 85% Chardonnay, 15% Viognier. That Viognier adds such a nice floral and peachy component to the Chardonnay. This is definitely doiing French winemaking in a modern way! This wine tastes like a tropical fruit salad…fresh pineapple, peach, melon…along with hints of vanilla. The cool thing about Chards, you can really drink them with anything. I’d pair this one with, wait for it….fruit salad!!! LOL! Or a fruit tart or pie.
